Marion Wood

With great sadness, the WoW Committee have to announce the loss of one of their own. Marion Wood, who, with members of her family present, passed away in the early hours of this morning, 19th June 2026.

Marion served very diligently on our committee for many years and will be hugely missed by us and her many, many friends in our community. She moved with her late husband David, to the Widewater Lagoon from Shoreham Beach foreshore in 2004 and regularly enjoyed visits from her five children and several grandchildren.

Marion was brought up on a farm in Kent during the war and she met her husband David after he was demobbed from wartime activities with the Royal Air Force.  Her future homes, due to David’s subsequent roles and activities included York, Northumberland, Kenya, Kent, and then with the Nature Conservancy Council, in London, Shropshire, Wales and Banbury. They were both very keen Naturalists and following their retirement, they developed a mutual hobby in running Identification Walks of Coastal flowers, plants and shrubs on Shoreham Beach and then continued these walks for WoW members and local residents at the Widewater Lagoon Local Nature Reserve.

Our thoughts at this sad time are with Marion’s very loving family and her many friends. The thoughts about Marion from her fellow WoW committee members were best summed up this morning by another member of our committee, Barbara Rose;

“What a life Marion had.  It’s so lovely that she got to live a full life & end it when she was tired with her family around her.
A truly amazing woman who has left big footprints along the lagoon”.

God bless, lovely Marion and rest in peace.
