Mitigation Pipe Clearing Volunteers

You may have seen a press release yesterday from the Environment Agency confirming plans for the imminent refurbishment of the Mitigation Pipe.

Meanwhile, at the other end of the pipe, WoW have been carefully monitoring the water levels since they dropped perilously low early in 2025.

Peter Whitton (nee Login) has been collating data for over 6 months showing positive trends in salinity, depth, and pipe flow rates. This will provide valuable information to supporting agencies to help predict and prevent future blockages.

Peter has recently set up a task force of volunteers to help clear seaweed from the lagoon end pipes. A group of 12 volunteer helpers are now being used to assist in keeping the pipe flowing and you may see them at either of the 2 pipe outlets during high tides.

Anyone else eager to get involved should get in touch via the Facebook page.

Many, many thanks to Peter and the volunteers.

All the best,

Gill Purnell, WoW Chairperson.
