Some very positive news was announced on Friday 28th November:
From Tom Rutland MP:
HUGE WIN FOR THE WIDEWATER LAGOON CAMPAIGN!
We have secured agreement from the Environment Agency to REPLACE the mitigation pipe and secure the lagoon’s future for years to come.
Sometime between January and March next year, the part of the pipe that runs between the sea and the coastal footpath will be replaced during low tides. The timber supporting the structure will also be replaced, using recycled timber from a coastal site in Bournemouth!
I hope this comes as welcome news to everyone who loves the Widewater Lagoon and I am so grateful to everyone who has played a role in making this happen, particularly the wonderful World of Widewater committee.
Thank you.
From Andy Manville ( EA):
Widewater Lagoon Mitigation Pipe Refurbishment
January to March 2026
Widewater lagoon provides an important habitat for flora and fauna and is a designated Local Wildlife Site. The Widewater Lagoon mitigation pipe ensues sufficient saline water levels can be retained within the lagoon by allowing controlled flows of sea water to enter when levels fall.
Essential refurbishment works are being undertaken to replace the seaward length of pipe and supporting timber frame that are in poor condition.
Access to the beach at this location will be temporarily restricted whilst the work is undertaken. Thank you for your understanding and apologies for any inconvenience caused.
Gill Purnell, World of Widewater Committee Chair, said: “The Widewater Lagoon is loved by people not just in Widewater but across Sussex. “As someone fortunate to live on the lagoon, I know how much this means to our community. I am grateful to Tom and Andy Manville from the Environmental Agency for taking the lead and co-ordinating the response which prevented ecological disaster.” “Our committee is looking forward to seeing the works completed and
continuing to play a key role alongside Lancing Parish Council in ensuring that the lagoon thrives now and in the future.”
